Deah Berry Mitchell is a historian, speaker, author and entrepreneur who works to preserve Black cultural heritage. She is a contributor to the New York Times and has a regular column in the Fort Worth Report (The Dish, with Deah) and is the author of Cornbread & Collard Greens: How West African Cuisine & Slavery Influenced Soul Food (2019). 


Deah’s Soul of DFW bus tours educate the community on the significance of Black culture through cuisine and local history. She is a 5th generation Texan. Deah is a Ph.D student in history and a teaching fellow at the University of North Texas where she is focusing her work on American Historical Foodways. She is recipient of the 2023-2024 Julia Child Foundation for Gastronomy & the Culinary Arts Fellowship in Food History. She is a board member of the National Juneteenth Museum.
