R.K Russel

Ryan Russell is a former NFL defensive end, published author, social justice advocate, poet, essayist, and artist. In August 2019, he made history as the first active NFL player to publicly identify as bisexual. In his powerful memoir The Yards Between Us, Russell shares his story—his love of football, the devastating tightrope of keeping his sexuality hidden, the strain of balancing public success with private truth, and the importance of breaking barriers.

A decorated player for the Dallas Cowboys and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Russell has sacked Hall of Famers and competed against the fiercest athletes at the peak of their careers. Since coming out, he has written about his experience as a Black queer man in sports for The New York Times, The Guardian, The Los Angeles Times, Out Magazine, and Queer Majority, among others. He has also been a vocal advocate for LGBTQ+ inclusion in professional sports, leading multiple NFL Pride initiatives, including the NFL Super Bowl LVI Pride Panel and the league’s National Coming Out Day PSA.

His short documentary Finding Free was nominated for a Sports Emmy and won a Webby Award. He has been recognized by the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), named Sportsperson of the Year by GAY TIMES (UK), and included on the prestigious OUT 100 List in 2019.

Sony Pictures Television is now adapting Russell’s groundbreaking memoir into a half-hour comedy series. Through the lens of his extraordinary journey, the show will explore themes rarely addressed in sports—including intersectionality, race, sexuality, and the expectations of masculinity. Russell will continue to champion LGBTQ+ athletes and communities through his art, serving as writer and executive producer on the series alongside Saeed Crumpler and Gabrielle Union.
