Cati de los Ríos is an associate professor of Language Literacy, and Culture at UC Berkeley’s School of Education. She is a former language and literacy teacher in Massachusetts and California public schools. Her research draws from ethnographic and community-based research methodologies to 1) explore Latino children's robust language practices, language learning, and peer language sharing; and 2) examine how bi/multilingual youth and families build off of intergenerational cultural legacies while innovating new forms of creative political expression and civic engagement.
Cati de los Rios’s research has been supported by The National Academy of Education, Spencer Foundation, Ford Foundation, and National Council of Teachers of English. de los Rios is the recipient of several national awards including the Early Career Award from American Educational Research Association (AERA), and the Early Career Achievement Award from Literacy Research Association (LRA).
She holds a Ph.D. in Literacy/English Education from Teachers College, Columbia University, a Masters in Theological Studies From Harvard Divinity School, s Masters and secondary teaching credential from Harvard Graduate School of Education, and an undergraduate degree from Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles.
